Puzzle over three-headed frog

This is just freaky. Not sure if it's because of contaminated water where the frogs breed or if it's just one of those freaks of nature.

I just saw a TV special about this. They said that there's a parasite that does it.

The parasite lives in water birds. Its eggs pass out with feces, into the water. A tiny thing hatches and bores into the frog's tadpoles. As the tadpole changes into a frog, the parasite attacks the chromosomes and thus produces frogs with no legs, ten legs, etc. Also multiple heads, deformed muscles and bones, and all sorts of things. This makes the frog an easy target for frog-eating water birds.

The parasite thus manages to get back into its main host where it can complete its cycle and produce more eggs.

The show was kind of fascinatingly horrible.
