Living up to the hype?

Postby ashes13 » Wed Sep 27, 2006 3:48 pm

There are some books that just about everyone seems to want to get their hands on and read (Da Vinci Code, The Kite Runner, Eats, Shoots & Leaves, White Teeth The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and The Undomestic Goddess to name just a few that spring to mind)

Have you ever gone out of your way to read a book that has been highly praised/rated by critics? Did it fall short or did it meet and/or exceed your expectations?

the only way i buy books is to read some of it, sometimes sitting on the bookstore floor. i picked up a book in costco that had been ever so highly praised and on oprah's book list or something. i read a few pages and dropped it like a hot coal.

come to think of it, a lot of oprah's favourites are damn depressing.
