Strong Passphrases

Postby Yogi » Thu Jun 14, 2007 7:49 am

We all use passwords. By and large they are easy to crack because we make them simple enough to remember. Unfortunately, simple passwords are a major cause of security leaks. The current thinking is to use pass phrases consisting of several words and numbers in combination. This is particularly important when setting up wireless networks and game consoles. The above link provides a method of generating easy to remember pass phrases, which you might also consider using for any login to a secure network.

What would be even better would be to generate a truly random "password" of totally random capital and small letters, numbers, punctuations, etc., then save this password to a removable media (floppy disk, Zip Disk, CD/r, or what have you). Then when you require the password, just insert the media into the drive, open the text document, copy the password to the paste buffer, and paste it where you need it.

Oh, and when you're finished (and if you want to be that paranoid), be sure to clear the paste buffer and any other place the number might have been "temporarily" stored.
