How do you stop firefox's d*mned auto-update? It keeps downloading the latest version, then says that it can't update. Then it downloads the same version again. And again. And again.

It's slowing my Internet speed to a crawl for everything else.

According to Firefox's "Help", there's a tab that you can use to choose to turn this feature on or off-- but i have no tab such as they describe. Firefox's website has no information on this.

Help! I just want to shut the autoupdate feature off, permanently.

From the menu bar, select Tools -> Options... -> Advance, then the Update Tab

That's really odd, MD, because Firefox updates for me all the time, and never has a problem with the update.

You might want to try going to the <a href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/">Firefox site,</a> downloading the latest version, then install it over the top of of your existing installation. According to <a href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/2.0.0.4/releasenotes/">the Release Notes:</a>

<i>"Please note that installing Firefox 2 will overwrite your existing installation of Firefox. You won't lose any of your bookmarks or browsing history, but some of your extensions and other add-ons might not work until updates for them are made available."</i>

Also note that, under "Removing Firefox 2," it says:

<i>"Removing Firefox 2 won't remove your bookmarks, web browsing history, extensions or other add-ons. This data is stored in your profile folder...[snip]...Any version of Firefox that you install after removing Firefox 2 will continue to use the data from this profile folder."</i>

Of course, I included the last in the event that the reason you can't upgrade Firefox is that your present installation (or the Registry entry for it) is corrupted. Then you might have to uninstall Firefox and reinstall the latest one.

Oh MD. If you are going to uninstall then reinstall FF, might I recommend these items:

If you are concerned with loss of your bookmarks:

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2410

load this up.
log on save your bookmarks.
When you do a clean reinstall of FF, reinstall this add-on.
Log on, grab (download) your bookmarks.

I like to back up my bookmarks with this little guy:
Bookmark Backup
http://www.pikey.me.uk/mozilla/?addon=bb
or:
http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-in ... markbackup

Better yet, save all your add-ons and bookmarks and what ever else seems important, with one of these:

FEBE (FF environment backup extention)
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109

I actually use all three of these.
Syncing bookmarks and backing them up have saved my hindy quiet a few times.

I used Yogi's answer first, and it worked.

However, I SWEAR that I looked there and that option wasn't there before. Really!

(D*mn, I feel dumb.)

I also used the suggestion to d/l the complete 2.0.0.6 and install it. Now I have the latest edition and no more auto-download.

Thanks, everybody.
