Server Migration Latest News

Postby forumadmin » Wed Jul 25, 2007 11:23 am

The time is nearing for us to pack up and move. I'll be the last one to shut the lights off here at the anointed time. After that time access to our forum on this server will no longer be possible. However, a maintenance web page with instructions and news will be available at this address (bookmark it if you have not already):

http://www.brainformation.com/

It can take up to three days for the world's Internet routers to point to the new server and not the maintenance page on this old server. Keep checking the above web address for news and updates. At some point in time it will take you to the new server, but if you can't wait, use the instructions which will be emailed to you to edit your system's hosts file and bypass the usual network routing. Editing system files, however, might be more than the average computer user wants to do, thus alternate entertainment links will appear on the maintenance page during the migration.

E-mail to the administrator's account may or may not reach it's destination during the migration period. However, everything will be back to normal after the move is completed. Should you need to get in touch with me while we are on the move, I set up a temporary e-mail account for that purpose:

guard6280@mypacks.net

After the new server is up and running, you will look around and wonder what really happened. Nothing will be different than what you see now (hopefully). It's possible the server will respond a little quicker, but the appearance of Brainformation should be identical with one exception. Under the site's title, Brainformation, we currently have the subtitle "A waystation along the information highway." The new subtitle during the migration will be "Welcome to the new home of Brainformation." If that is the only change, you may wonder why we are doing this. The answer is that the new server has more resources than the old. We will be able to expand and possibly upgrade to new software after we relocate.

Hopefully the move will go without a glitch, but being an old time system administrator from way back, I'll give it a 50/50 chance to be flawless. In any case, I can assure you that we will be up and running eventually, even if things do not go according to plan.

Basically, you might not be able to get into the site for a couple days. No need to worry because it will all sort itself out without you doing anything. I expect that by Monday you won't know the difference.

Looks like the migration is going fairly smoothly. I have noted only one casualty so far. All the people who have been using the DigitalTwilight style no longer have that available as a choice. Cold Steel seems to have replaced it.

I've noticed this site is loading up faster for me, like almost immediately.

I noticed the same thing here, but I thought it was just me. I would be very glad if there is a sustained performance increase.

Also, for those of you who are fans of Digital Twilight style, it has been restored and is available for use.

I get the same problem once in a while when using DigitalTwilight. I have no clue what's doing it

The migration is nearing completion, and only one minor problem still exists with the administrator's e-mail account. A team of technicians from our hosting service is working on it and hopefully it will be resolved some time today.

More news as it arrives.

well, heck and congratulations Yogi - if every site i go to on the Web functioned, responded and flowed the way yours does, i wouldnt recognize it as the web any more.

way cool on your migration, process - updating members, keeping on track and wow. heck it does look the same... i havnt a clue about steel cold and twilight zones but heck i never did.

in short - (ha - nearly impossible for me) it looks great. well done and happy toasts to ya. butter or jam? either way keep on flowing - you're a gem among web pebbles. - aloha 1da (Wrick)

ps - it is responding faster for me. ...and i can barely keep up - even when it's slow. just my nature. be having fun. and be well.
